AER+APOnet Meeting
Monday March 3, 2025 9:00am - 10:30am JST
416
The Asia-Europe Ring establishes a Co-operative arrangement between eleven leading-edge Research and Education Networks (RENs) with 100G connectivity between Europe and Asia to provide back up for each other in the event of any link failure, thereby creating an extremely robust and resilient 100G network ring, to advance research and education across the Asia-Pacific and Europe region.

This has proven essential in the recent cable cut in the region and between EU and Asia. This session will focus on the management and how we can promote collaboration between EU and Asia Oceania.

SIG: Internet Governance - Role of NRENs in shielding Internet Fragmentation
Monday March 3, 2025 11:00am - 12:30pm JST
414
The global Internet thrives on openness, interoperability, and inclusivity, serving as the backbone of education, research, and innovation worldwide. However, the rising threats of Internet fragmentation—caused by geopolitical tensions, data localization mandates, cyberattacks, filtering fake news, and proprietary systems—pose a significant challenge to its universal nature. The session will come up with the pivotal role of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs), with their unique position at the intersection of technology, policy, and education, in mitigating these threats.

The session will be organised in panel discussion mode with expectation from NREN representatives [BdREN, NREN, DrukREN, LEARN, CERNET, ThaiREN, REANZ, MyREN, PERN, NKN and PREGINET] about their observations on the specific challenges in respective countries. A questionnaire may be prepared ahead of time to get feedbacks from the participating Asia-Pacific NRENs and the panel consisting of NRENs from both developed and developing economies [as mentioned] may come forward to discuss on the challenges and threats delved out of the questionnaire and the probable remedies to mitigate those threats.

Introduction to SIRTFI (IAM WG)
Monday March 3, 2025 11:00am - 12:30pm JST
417
Sirtfi is a means to enable a coordinated response to a security incident in a federated context that does not depend on a centralised authority or governance structure to assign roles and responsibilities for doing so. It defines a modest set of security protections for federated entities and a standard means of publishing security contact information for them. A party participates in Sirtfi by first ensuring that they implement those security protections, then coordinating with their Federation Operator to publish this self-attestation together with their security contact information.

This presenation will discuss what Sirtif is, the participants and their roles and how it benefits the global federation space. We will also discribe the traffic light protocol that is central to Sirtfi.

Speaker Profile :  https://academy.apnic.net/en/profiles/imtiaz-sajid

The core of this training revolves around Segment Routing over IPv6 Data Plane (SRv6), providing practical insights into its principles and applications. Through hands-on lab demonstrations, participants will deepen their understanding by seeing theoretical concepts put into practice. To ensure maximum benefit from the training, we recommend that participants come with a solid understanding of routing concepts and experience with dynamic routing protocols such as OSPF, IS-IS, and BGP. Prior knowledge of MPLS and MPLS-based services will also be helpful in grasping the context and potential use cases of SRv6.

The Asi@Connect project—co-funded by the European Union—in collaboration with APNIC, conducted Capacity Building training programs in ten (10) countries across the Asia-Pacific region in 2024. The topics covered ranged from Network Security, Internet Routing, and SDN to MPLS.
The upcoming session will feature three presentations: the first by APNIC, which oversaw the program, followed by two presentations from representatives of two of the ten participating countries.
In APNIC’s presentation, an overview of last year’s technical training program under Asi@Connect will be provided, highlighting key results, outcomes, and challenges. Additionally, brief information on this year’s collaboration will be shared.
Representatives from BdREN (Bangladesh) and PREGINET (Philippines) will also present their perspectives on hosting the program, sharing their experiences, challenges, and suggestions for improvement. As two of the three countries (BD, PH & TH) set to host another session, their insights will be valuable for enhancing future training programs.
We encourage you to take a moment to review last year’s achievements and explore opportunities to attend this year’s training program—either in your country or in neighboring countries.
