Workshop : The crucial role of NRENs in data management and Open Science (RDA)
Tuesday March 4, 2025 9:00am - 10:30am JST
418
The role of NRENS in accelerating the achievement of the global Open Science goals should not be underestimated. The NRENs, as providers of the main digital research infrastructure to institutions, through network connection and trust and identity services (e.g. eduroam) are perfectly positioned to support researchers with their need to access, store, publish, share research and scientific data. In collaboration with dedicated university and institutional support services, NRENs can offer data services e.g. Researchdrive, Data Management Planning (DMP) tools, Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs) etc., as well as help to broker service contracts.
This 90-minute session will outline the value of NRENs to the global Open Science goals, with concrete illustrations of use cases, and opportunities for global collaborations. Furthermore, it will outline the value of the global Research Data Alliance (RDA) community in developing guidelines, best practices and standards to support research data management for Open Science.

Guest presentations:

"RAID - a new PID service in Europe", Giacomo Cannizzaro, Technical Advisor, SURF (Netherlands)

"The crucial role of NRENs in data management and Open Science: Philippine perspective", Jelina Tetangco, Supervising Science Research Specialist, DOST Advanced Science and Technology Institute (Philippines)

"HEAnet supporting Open Science", Jenny O'Neil, Research Engagement Officer, HEAnet (Ireland)

"REANNZ Update", Amber McEwan, CEO, Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand (New Zealand)

"Introduction to NII Research Data Cloud", Prof Kazu Yamaji, NII Director of Research Centre for Open Science and Data Platform, and

Mikiko Tanifujii, Deputy Director of Research Centre for Open Science and Data Platform, National Institute of Informatics (NII) (Japan)

BOF : Omics Data Security
Tuesday March 4, 2025 4:00pm - 5:30pm JST
418
Omics technologies including genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and transcriptomics are thought to be the most important enablers for precision medicine and comprehension of biological systems. However, omics data is sensitive and immutable which raises significant security and ethical issues about data ownership and access control. This proposal highlights the
vulnerability of this unique data and the need to secure it through an innovative method that combines cutting-edge encryption, privacy-preserving protocols and blockchain technology. This work focuses on robust encryption to safeguard patient DNA, secure data-sharing platforms for collaboration, and blockchain-based solutions for transparency and regulatory compliance. The
noise addition technique is one of the privacy-enhancing methods that securely analyze the data without violating individual privacy. Blockchain technologies ensure the immutability of data management, active tracking of patient consent in a dynamic manner, and higher levels of encryption techniques in data storage and transmission. Interdisciplinary approaches have been sought that bring together bioinformaticians, IT professionals, and healthcare providers to
collaboratively deliver omics data security solutions. This BOF group will involve researchers, bioinformaticians and software developers working together. It ensures that sensitive biological data is handled responsibly and ethically, thereby building trust and fostering innovation in healthcare and research.
