IoT (Internet of Things) is a key technology to deepen the digitization of society, and therefore many people believe the importance of promoting IoT research, development, and deployment for future society growth. The APAN IoT Working Group is a forum for discussions and collaborations on IoT platforms, infrastructures, services, and applications. Please feel free to present your IoT-related applications and services, including case studies of demonstrations and work-in-progress experiments.

Title: Internet of Realities: A Future of Connected People and Spaces

Abstract: The pace at which changes in the real world and their impacts are expanding is increasing, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, military conflicts across various countries, and large-scale natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons. Simultaneously, advancements in AI technologies, exemplified by large language models, are continuously expanding their applicability. The trends in open hardware and open software are further reducing the time lag between research and societal implementation. Thus, the concept of "fluid reality," where yesterday's reality may not apply today, is expected to progress further. Moreover, real-space sensing using IoT sensors and LiDAR is becoming more advanced and affordable. This enables digital-twins, which provide digital replicas and future simulations of physical spaces, and high-immersion virtual reality technologies, which offer highly immersive experiences. These developments are shaping a new reality that interlinks physical and informational spaces, thereby increasing the diversity of reality. To capture, connect, and enhance mutual understanding among people, and to create new value from these diverse and multifaceted realities, new perspectives and various technological developments are necessary. In this talk, I will introduce and discuss the vision and challenges of our Internet of Realities project.
BIO: Takuro Yonezawa is an associate professor in the Graduate School of Engineering, Nagoya University. He received his Ph.D. degree in media and governance from Keio University in 2010. His research interests are the intersection of distributed systems, human-computer interaction, and sensors/actuators technologies. He has led several smart city projects as a technical coordinator, such as FP7/ Horizon2020/NICT European-Japanese collaborative research project (ClouT/ BigClouT project), and others.

Title: Field experiments with multiple "Smart Village" applications over the private LoRa Mesh network in Sri Lanka

Abstract: We built a mesh-type network infrastructure using private LoRa and Raspberry Pi and conducted a field experiment in rural areas of Sri Lanka. In this experiment, we not only collected data from various sensors installed on the network—including weather sensors (temperature, humidity, solar radiation, wind speed, wind direction, and rainfall), oxygen concentration sensors, and river water level sensors—but also implemented multiple applications for shared use.
One such application involved transmitting signals from button-type alert devices carried by elderly individuals and pregnant women, which triggered alerts for administrators. Another application allowed administrators to input text messages into the system, which were then converted into speech and broadcast through loudspeakers attached to the network devices.
This presentation will introduce the details of these field experiments and the developed system.
